A region is a political unit commonly used in many countries around the world to govern over many units of local government beneath the state or, if not in a federated nation-state, beneath the national level of government.
A region's boundaries may often be defined by watersheds, shorelines topography, national or regional parks, farmland boundaries, and wilderness reserves.
Some local governments may exist in multiple regions in some countries.
Regional governance is the act of the governing a region as a whole rather than within a certain area of local government.
It is a form of public administration that exist not at the absolute lowest tier of government, but at a higher tier than that of local government and, in the case of federations like the United States, at a lower tier than that of State Government.
Often, the regional governing body that carries out the act of regional governance may be composed of many directly-elected officials who may act as representative of a voting district defined by the regional governing body, or by whoever may establish a regional governing body to carry out regional governance in the first place.
The only example of a regional government with officials directly elected by the people to represent the residents of the region in the United States is the Oregon Metropolitan Regional Government ("Metro"), a governing body of representative councilors led by an elected "Metro President" that carries out the act of regional governance for the Portland, Oregon, Metropolitan area.
At petition4regionsmississippi.com, we believe that the best resolution that is to be used for redressing social problems, such as disinvestment in central cities, the spread of placeless suburban growth, increasing separation by race and income of different social strata, environmental deterioration loss of agricultural lands and wilderness, and the erosion of society’s built heritage is to resolve these issues at the scale and scope at which these issue arise:
WE BELIEVE THAT THESE ISSUES MAY BE RESOLVED AT THE REGIONAL SCALE AND THE ISSUES MAY BE REDRESSED AT AS BROAD A SCOPE AS THE REGION.
Our petition, which you may feel free to ask the website's author, John Emmerich of Jackson, Mississippi, to view, calls on the State of Mississippi to look over the way that our state in America is organized.
We advocate for the creation of a new regional government to provide services to not only increase the quality of life across Mississippi, but to work within separate jurisdictions to eliminate many social problems across Mississippi, such as unequal opportunity between races and urban or suburban or rural environs, and we believe that the restructuring of the hierarchy of governments in Mississippi to include a regional-scale government, that is, a government between that of local-scale government and Statewide government, is a necessity for Mississippi to move forward in the world as far a resolving social problems goes.
